Zandspruit youth breaking barriers

The academic results of little children in Zandspruit are expected to improve after the intervention of two 15-year-old bookworms, Molahlehi Ramafikeng and Keolopile Kehalotse, who have started an afterschool programme to assist disadvantaged children.

The duo, currently enrolled at Far North Secondary School in Cosmo City, said there was a huge need to keep those younger than them occupied with educational activities before they are swallowed up by the social ills affecting the community.

“I always wanted to start a programme in the community but I did not have the support I needed to run it,” said Molahlehi, who has partnered with Football Without Borders to help drive the programme to success.

The programme is called Flavoured Junior Youth, a name chosen by Molahlehi that he says best describes his personality as a youth with big dreams in life.

He said the main objective of the programme is to assist children with their homework, reading and building their confidence.

The growth of the programme since its inception early this year has resulted in a need for extra hands and resources. “Our challenge is that the number of children attending the programme has increased, so we end up needing more books and furniture,” said Molahleli, who is appealing to the public for donations.
