National Tongue Twister Day

Tie your tongue in knots on #NationalTongueTwisterDay

“He thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.” (Stephen King – It)

13 November is National Tongue Twister Day – a day encouraging you to give your tongue a workout and challenge your friends to perform the most difficult tongue twisters of the year.

It could be an elegant dance, or an ungainly stumble through a linguistic waltz. Whether discussing “Peter Piper picking a peck of pickled peppers” or chirping out “A quick-witted cricket critic”, your tongue will be tied into many knots this year.

Peter Piper was a real person who was renowned for his taste in delicious spices – resulting in him being immortalised. He was a one-armed horticulturist of French heritage, which should have made planting quite difficult. He also liked to obtain his spice seeds at the tip of a sword and the roar of a cannonball. Yes, he was also a pirate.

When he got his hands on some nutmeg, he made up his rhyme – “Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers”.

According to research, the most difficult tongue twister in the English language is “The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick.” It is an awful tongue twister which will have your tongue tied in knots for weeks – or make you sound like a snake with a lisp.

Celebrating today is easy-peasy – you just have to spend the day practicing, reciting and sharing your favourite tongue twisters with friends and family. Make things interesting and hold a competition at work to come up with new tongue twisters – or just challenge your family and friends to say them as fast as they can.

Tongue twister day only occurs once a year – accept the challenge!
