Dare to dream?

The Florida Club Toastmasters held their 949th meeting to encourage their members and the public to live out their dreams.

The Florida Toastmasters Club held its 949th meeting to encourage its members and the public to live out their dreams. The club has taken pride in generating well-spoken individuals who have taken time to enhance their public-speaking and presentation skills.

Their meeting on Tuesday 17 October, hosted the winnersing speakers from Trinityhouse Little Falls Inter-house Public Speaking contest. Toastmaster Dawn Hemming opened the meeting with a quote from Oprah Winfrey, “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams”.

This was followed by the learners delivering their award-winning speeches at the podium. Grade 5 learner Keira Bleksley titled her speech ‘I lost it’, Grade 6 learner Amanda Plummer explained some of the reasons “Why being a kid sucks / is great”, and Grade 7 learner Brigitte Larkins debunked the “Five-second’ rule. This was followed by a congratulatory applause.

As the night progressed, Brad Cassell gave his speech on sustainable living, stating “a sustainable lifestyle takes committing to learning, experimenting, exploring, increasingly sustainable practices and, above all, loving.

Every day we make choices in our lives that affect the environment, the climate and other species.”

Michael Glencross informed the members that he had a problem with his communication skills and he learnt that effective communication is ‘about me’ rather than exchanging information and in that, it improved his persuasion and development skills.

Robert de Kramer then shared his speech of a Charity Golf Day that helps individuals to give back to the needy, with the night of speeches crowned by Tim Knight’s ‘The Coach’ which was a recreated scenario on how to have a performance conversation with a committee member. It was an eventful evening to say the least, as awards were handed over to celebrate the achievements of all.
