Primary school girl taken to hospital after being assaulted by teacher

Allegedly not the first time the teacher has assaulted a learner.

Yesterday, 2 November, a 13-year-old female learner at Culembeeck Primary School was assaulted by a teacher to such a degree that she had to be taken to hospital.

He allegedly accused her of ‘sitting provocatively’ and then slapped her numerous times before trying to physically remove her from the classroom. She fell and he fell over her. He then accused her of tripping him. She then phoned her mother who phoned her aunt, since she [the mother] works in Rustenberg. They went to the school but the principal, Mpho Mnisi, made them wait half-an-hour before they were allowed to see her. The teacher who assaulted her was present and asked her why she had called her mother. Mnisi then asked the girl to forgive the teacher.

The girl had bruises and marks on her face and was taken to a clinic so that her injuries could be documented on a JT88 form (which has to be obtained to provide to the police in an assault case). The mother opened a case and it is believed that the teacher will be arrested today. It is also alleged that this was not the first time the teacher assaulted a learner.

The school was contacted for comment but, since they are not allowed to speak to the media, the Record was referred to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE). The Record is currently awaiting comment from the Department.
