31 October is National Magic Day and is observed annually by magic lovers all over the world.
Magic is described as the performing art that entertains audiences by staging tricks or creating illusions of seemingly impossible or supernatural feats using natural means. A person performing such illusions or magic tricks is called an illusionist or magician.
Magic has more than likely been performed throughout history, with one of the most well-known magicians being Harry Houdini, who was known for his escapology (the practice of escaping from restraints or other traps) as well as developing a range of stage magic tricks. He also made use of a full range of conjuring techniques which included fake equipment and collusion with individuals from the audience. Houdini’s show-business savvy was as great as his performance skills and there is a museum in his honour in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

National Magic Day is sponsored by the Society of American Magicians and in 1938 a Chicago member of the association sought official sanction for a “Houdini” day. 31 October was proclaimed as National Magic Day after Mrs Houdini sanctioned this day in Harry Houdini’s memory.
