Poor road maintenance led to illegal road signs

Peter Waterson, a resident on the same road for at least 35 years, said he has never seen such poor maintenance of the roads in Weltevreden Park.

The erection of makeshift of road signs on Albert Street in Weltevreden Park has been blamed at the poor maintenance of roads in the area.

Peter Waterson, a resident that has lived on the same road for at least 35 years, said he has never seen such poor maintenance of the roads in the area.

He said the makeshift signages have prevented serious crashes on Albert Street. “As for the pothole in Albert Street, if those signs and painting around the pothole had not been done by some concerned resident, there could have been a serious accident or even a vehicle being written off,” he explained.

Waterson complained that the potholes have caused a backlog of traffic next to his property. He appealed to Ward 89 councillor Amelia Bester to follow this matter up.

Bester, in an interview with Northsider, disapproved the sign, saying “that it qualifies an illegal sign which attracts a fine.”

“Our councillor Amelia Bester, as she knows about these potholes, should rather follow up with JRA then complain about residents using their initiative and being proactive citizens,” Waterson said.

The Ward 89 councillor encouraged residents to report matters relating to potholes to the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA). “All potholes should be logged with JRA.

Residents can use hotline@jra.org.za or the JRA app, thereafter can send reference numbers to their ward councillors, who will bring the matter to the attention of the area manager,” Bester explained the process.
