Meet Witpoortjie’s local Produce Man

Witpoortjie’s own local produce man Obed Phiri brings joy to his daily customers as he walks the streets, selling fresh fruit to all.

Witpoortjie’s very own local produce man, Obed Phiri, brings joy to his daily customers as he walks the streets, selling fresh fruit to all.

Working at the Corlett Avenue/ Ontdekkers Road intersection, this ever-vibrant man has a passion for fruit and is a consistent helping hand to all those around him, while never complaining of the warm weather or the long journey he makes from Mabopane, Pretoria to Roodepoort on a daily basis.

Obed said he has always considered himself an entrepreneur.

“I’ve been selling in this area for close to 20 years because I need to make money to feed myself and my family. I have tried to get jobs in other place and sometimes, I’ve gotten piece jobs here and there, but the work finishes and I’m back to square one. I am very proud of my business and my customers are the best.”

Obed said he was affected by the recent hailstorm, which destroyed his home in an informal settlement.

“My house collapsed during the rain so I am trying to rebuild and fix it. All I’m asking from people is to continue buying from me and supporting my business. This way, I can still provide for my family and build a future for my kids.”

For those wishing to donate or support Obed’s business, his contact number is 072 787 5430.
