Local beauty queen wants to win title

Varene is a Miss Commonwealth SA 2017 Finalist

Varene Wilson, a 24-year-old Davidsonville resident, wants to become the next Miss Commonwealth SA title-holder and is one step closer to realising this dream.

The former West Ridge High School learner has been selected as one of the finalists in this year’s competition and will be contesting for the crown during the Grand Finale taking place on 8 December.

Varene is no stranger to competing in pageants, having been a Regional Semi Finalist in the Miss Earth SA 2017 competition. She said, “I want to be a role model and make a positive difference – not only in my community, but in the lives of my peers as well.”

The Miss Commonwealth SA pageant aims to empower young women with the knowledge to bring about change to communities in need, with a strong focus on the internal and external development of these women. The pageant is not only a stepping stone for young women to follow their dreams – it also creates a platform for them to become charity ambassadors who touch the lives of others and make a difference.

“By entering this competition, I am able to give back to my community, which is ultimately my goal. I strive to make a difference in the lives of others,” Varene said.

The title holders will become involved in charitable causes and uphold the aims of the Commonwealth, including racial harmony, poverty eradication and social cohesion. “It is our duty as a community to assist young women by creating opportunities for them and also to give them space to be role models who are committed to serve the needs of society,” said the Miss Commonwealth South Africa National Director, Ngawethu Ka-Siphiwo.
