National Dessert Day

Indulge in that wonderful, sweet meal ending on #NationalDessertDay

14 October is the day to indulge in that wonderful, sweet ending to a meal called dessert, as it is National Dessert Day. After all, dessert does not go to the stomach, but directly to the heart.

Desserts can be many things, including cakes, cookies, jelly, pastries, ice cream, pies, pudding, candy and fruit. Desserts have changed quite a bit over the years – from natural candies and nuts to complex souffles and multi-layered cakes. The range of desserts that can be made in each region is affected by the available ingredients.

The very first desserts required the minimum effort and preparation, as ancient cultures were more focused on the nutritional value in food in order for them to survive. However, in modern cultures, a variety of dessert options are available – ice cream went from a shaved ice substance with added flavouring to the dairy-based, sweet treat we eat today, for instance.

To celebrate, go out to a dessert shop or restaurant and indulge in a sweet treat. Go online or page through a recipe book and try a new recipe to share with your friends and family.

Use #NationalDessertDay to post photos on social media.
