ANCYL postpones march against Shoprite U Save in Cosmo City

The march was scheduled for Saturday, 14 October, to demonstrate against an incident of woman and child abuse at a store.

A planned ANC Youth League march in Cosmo City to boycott Shoprite U Save has been postponed.

The march was scheduled for Saturday, 14 October, to demonstrate against an incident at the store on 7 October during which a woman, Thandiwe Chaparandzu and her three-year-old daughter were humiliated and abused.

Three security guards, who have been suspended following the intervention of government officials, were filmed wrongfully arresting a woman at the store after her daughter allegedly relieved herself outside the store.

The incident provoked strong criticism from the public, with the retailer and high-ranking officials from several political parties condemning and disapproving such behaviour.

In a statement released by Shoprite media, they indicated that, “The incident depicted in the video clip circulated on social media is not related to Shoprite or U Save. Cosmo City Centre Management has taken full responsibility for its security personnel handcuffing a shopping-centre patron who entered the U Save store after ignoring a request by them relating to an earlier incident in the centre. Shoprite strongly disapproves of the behaviour as witnessed in this video.”

The ANC branch secretary, Nosipho Cola confirmed the postponement of the march. She said there were some logistical problems that had to be fixed; however, ANC officials will meet with store management.

A new date for the march has not been finalised yet, Cola said. For more information, contact her on 082 841 7255.
