DA to monitor U-Save assault case

“Violence against women is barbaric and cannot be tolerated in any scenario,” said John Moodey, the DA Gauteng Provincial Leader.

The Democratic Alliance has strongly condemned the assault and handcuffing of Thandiwe Chaparandzu at Shoprite U Save in Cosmo City.

The 28-year-old mother was wrongfully arrested in front of her three-year-old daughter by three security guards at the store on 7 October.

It was reported that Thandiwe was assaulted after her daughter relieved herself outside the store. The handcuffing, which was filmed and circulated online, created turmoil, which led to the intervention of government officials.

“Violence against women is barbaric and cannot be tolerated in any scenario,” said John Moodey, the DA Gauteng Provincial Leader. “The three security guards who have been suspended and charged with assault are not fit to work in a public place especially where there are women and children.

“It is clear that they have no respect for women and children. Public places such as shopping malls are places where women and children should feel safe, not intimidated,” Moodey said vehemently.

Moodey added that he will be visiting the traumatised family, and called for the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, to arrange trauma counselling for both victims.

He also stated that the DA demands that Shoprite U Save, Cosmo City Mall and the security company that employees these guards formally apologise to the victims.

“For courtesy purposes, Shoprite and other supermarkets chains should consider installing ablution facilities in their stores for customers in cases of emergencies,” Moodey encouraged, adding that they continue to monitor the case to ensure those implicated face the full might of the law and Thandiwe and her daughter get the justice they deserve.
