“I would like to express my deepest appreciation to all residents who took part in today’s activities, whether at your local park, throughout your ward or just in your street.”
These were the words of the Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), councillor Herman Mashaba, talking about the CoJ’s first city-wide A Re Sebetseng voluntary clean-up. “Today’s clean-up was the first of many such events which the City plans to host on the last Saturday of each month, in an attempt to encourage residents to stand together to keep our city clean,” the mayor said.
The councillors for Wards 70, 71 and 84 were involved in the clean-up initiatives throughout Roodepoort.
Caleb Finn (Ward 70) was joined by Suzanne Clarke (Ward 83) and Leah Knott (Ward 97) in his clean-up effort at the Roodepoort Rugby Club Informal Settlement.
René Benjamin (Ward 71) was joined by Witpoortjie residents and together they cleaned up the area around Princess High School.
Gert Niemand (Ward 84) arranged a clean-up at the Hamerkop Bird Sanctuary which was attended by the Emergency Management Services (EMS) cadets stationed at the Florida Fire Station. “They cleaned out the sanctuary by collecting all rubble, leaving it clean for everyone to enjoy. This clean-up took place under the watchful eye of Beulah Cloete from the Gauteng Dragon Boat Association, who is also involved at the Bird Sanctuary. The youngsters enjoyed themselves while cleaning,” Gert said.
He said that the first initiative was quite a successful one, and assured residents that A Re Sebetseng will become a monthly clean-up operation that residents will be invited to join and help clean the City’s streets.
