Update: Witpoortjie girl found

She is safe at home and unharmed

“It’s going much better today, because I know my daughter is safe and unharmed,” said a clearly relieved Sonet Barnard.

Barnard, who is the mother of 16-year-old Mizandri Nagel, left no stone unturned in her search for her daughter after she went missing on 29 September. “We returned home at approximately 10 pm last night (4 October) from Carletonville where Mizandri was found. We picked her up at a friend’s house, after the Carletonville Police contacted us with her whereabouts,” Barnard said.

According to her, Mizandri wanted to visit her friend, but her grandparents (with whom she lives) did not give her permission to go. “She decided to pack a bag and go visit in any case. When we asked why she did not let us know that she was safe, she replied in typical teenager fashion, ‘I did not want you to be angry with me’,” said Barnard.

The family wants to extend its heartfelt thanks to everyone who immediately jumped in and assisted with the search. “We just want to thank all the organisations who never hesitated to help us, the various Community Policing Forums (CPFs), South African Support Initiative (SASI), Pink Ladies Organisation, and all the different community groups who shared the details on social media. Thank you for helping without judging us,” she said.

She concluded by saying, “She will always be my daughter, and if she goes missing, I will always do everything in my power to find her. People are quick to comment, but they do not always know the circumstances. Just think about it, if your child goes missing, you would want the community to help you find him or her, no matter the circumstances surrounding the disappearance.

We all know how teenagers are, and no matter where their journey takes them, we need to show them we love and care for them. I am just so grateful that she was found safe and unharmed.”
