Horizon View Primary School hosts Career Day for learners.
A Career Day for Grade 7 learners was coordinated at Horizon View Primary School recently. The school invited speakers from different career paths such as teaching, entrepreneurship, pastry and culinary chefs as well as a financial planner. The purpose of the session was to educate the learners about different career paths, delving into the advantages and disadvantages of each career. The enthusiastic learners listened raptly to each speaker. The learners were dressed in clothing that indicated a career path they were interested in.
Mathematics teacher and Deputy Principal Ayanda Nzama was first up on the podium and she discussed her career path as a teacher. She told learners about the immense opportunities that could be found in teaching.
“There is a shortage of teachers in many departments such as mathematics, sciences, languages and accounting. Even the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motsekga, was once a teacher.
So there are many possibilities and learners should not be worried about the salary,” she said.
One of the speakers that really excited the learners was Haroon Osman. He has many titles, such as entrepreneur, shark whisperer, astronaut, motivational speaker, youth coach and humanitarian. Haroon had the children eating out of the palm of his hand as he elaborated on his various adventures – swimming with sharks, being trained as an astronaut and having fun as a career.
School principal Mrs Sono was happy that the learners were getting advice from professionals who had experience.
“This session exposes the learners to different career paths and is vital to their growth. They get to learn a bit more about the careers from the perspective of those who are in them. This will help them in understanding which stream of subjects to pursue once they are in high school,” she said.
