Identities of robbers unknown as yet

A toy gun was found at the scene following the attempted hijacking.

Police are working tirelessly to identify the three suspects who were involved in a dramatic attempted hijacking at the intersection of Christiaan de Wet Road and Rinyani Avenue on 22 September.

The victim of the attempted hijacking turned hero on that evening, retaliated on the apparently armed suspects and shot and killed two of them, according to the incident report.

Captain Balan Muthan, the Honeydew Police Station spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying that a case of attempted hijacking and armed robbery was being investigated. He said the motorist was travelling with his wife at the time of the incident. They were approached by the suspects at the intersection.

“According to the driver, he stopped at the traffic lights as the light was red. He stated that three unknown men suddenly appeared next to the car – two on the passenger’ side, and one on the driver’s side.

He was pulled out of the vehicle while the other two pushed his wife in [the car],” said Muthan.

It was reported that the weapon the trio used in their attempt to hijack the victims was a toy gun, which was found at the scene.

Muthan said further that the motorist opened fire on the hijackers, instantly killing one suspect on the scene and mortally wounding another, who died while trying to escape.

“The victim shot one suspect in the head and the other in the chest,” he explained, adding that the third suspect was believed to be wounded but managed to escape. Unconfirmed reports have emerged that the third suspect died while trying to get away, but Muthan could not confirm the allegation.

It is unclear whether the victim realised that the suspects’ gun was fake when he pulled out a real one on them.

The motorist has been approached to give his side of the story but has not responded at this stage.
