Construction worker dies after soil collapse incident

The construction worker was declared dead at the scene after his rescue.

The construction worker who reportedly fell into an excavation during a soil collapse this morning, 13 September, on JG Strydom Road in Weltvreden Park has died.

Tyron Pieterse, the general manager at Vital Med, one of the emergency units that rushed to the scene, confirmed the death of the worker.

“His body was found underneath the pipe inside the trench,” said Pieterse.

It was reported that man accidentally fell into the trench and was swallowed by heaps of soil during the collapse.

Pieterse added that the trench unit from the City of Joburg came through to assist while paramedics stood on standby.

“The man was declared dead at the scene after being rescued by the trench unit,” he explained.

He also mentioned that the matter was subject to police investigation.
