Colleagues and friends remember fallen hero

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs goal-keeper Itumeleng Khune paid tribute to fallen Apcan security officer.

A moving candle lighting memorial service took place on the morning of 8 September outside Ruimsig Country Estate, to pay respect to the fallen Apcan security officer, Sabelo Kunyane, who died on 2 September.

Kunyane was shot and killed when his colleague responded to a robbery in progress at Blue Liquor store on CR Swart Road. Both officers were off duty at the time of the robbery.

The man responded with his colleague Mandla Masimago, who is currently fighting for his life in hospital after being wounded in the fatal shootout.

Kunyane will be laid to rest tomorrow, Saturday, 9 September at Tshepisong in Soweto.

Sharon Palos, the estate manager, confirmed that the staff from the security company will be attending the funeral.

The Apcan security staff, police, emergency personnel and residents from the Estate including the Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs goal keeper Itumeleng Khune came out to observe a moment of silence in honour of Kunyane.

Leonard Mbewe, one of Kunyane’s colleagues and friends wore a t-shirt displaying Kunyane’s picture, and shared his brotherhood memories. “He was like a brother and right-hand man to me. This is a very big loss and he will be sorely missed for his jokes and being a number one fan of Orlando Pirates,” said Mbewe, who appeared to be totally devastated.

Masimango still remains in critical care in hospital.
