The Discover Montessori Pre-School’s sanitary pad drive has kicked off on a high note, and they have received 37 packets so far.
“We appreciate all the donations we have received, and are positive that by the end of October (when the drive will come to an end), we will have enough products to donate to the chosen charities,” said Dineo Phadimenyane, a representative from the school and one of the organisers of the drive.
She said that the staff members at the school decided at the start of this year that they would task themselves to perform at least one act of kindness within the community. “We decided to do a food and blanket drive, as well as the sanitary pad drive, because we could not choose between the two, as both causes were essential to us,” Dineo said.
She added that people might find it unusual for a pre-school to run an initiative like this, but said, “Because we are women, we understand that having a decent supply of sanitary products is almost as important as having a fair supply of food in the house. It is a basic need that not every woman or young girl can afford.”
Dineo went to see the social worker at Girls and Boys Town in Kagiso, as well as the manager at the Child Welfare South Africa, Roodepoort to determine the need for sanitary products for the young girls they work with. “We established that they would sincerely appreciate this kind of supply as it would ease some of the financial pressure on the foster parents, most of whom are single women, taking care of orphaned and vulnerable children,” said Dineo.
She concluded by saying, “By helping young girls today, we help society altogether, but we cannot do this alone. We need the help of our school’s parents, our friends and our fellow community members to collect enough products to donate to these two organisations. We understand that not everyone will be able to purchase the products and drop them off at our school, therefore we do have an option for financial donations by using cardless services like FNB e-Wallet, Standard Bank Instant Money and ABSA CashSend.”
