Reading is the way to go at Laerskool Die Ruiter

Library will lead to more children reading

Laerskool Die Ruiter reopened is library this week as part of the 1 000 School Library Project. The event was attended by Gauteng Chief Education Specialist in Library Services, Busi Dlamini, Dumisani Tabane, Janine Le Roux, Kabelo Marungwana and various school governing body members. As part of the 1 000 School Library Project, there is also a Library Assistant programme which trains people to be librarians and assist in the schools. In Region C, there are 13 library assistants, who graduated earlier this month, to be placed in schools.

School principal Anton Marais quoted Dr. Seuss in his speech and said “The more that you read the more things you will know. The more that you can learn the more places you’ll go.”

“When I started here at the school, we were an Afrikaans medium school. In 2006, we then became a dual medium school.

Before that happened, our library was just stocked with Afrikaans books. They were not much help to our English-speaking learners.”

Library assistant Cindy Hattingh said the learners can come into the library and read and expand their vocabulary.

“I was trained to redo and launch the library. We have different kinds of resources such as newspapers, magazines, fiction and non-fiction books as well as a book club and extra reading for learners in the younger grades. We also celebrate literacy days.”

While Cindy will take the lead, she will be assisted by seven library monitors from Grade 6.
