National Trail Mix Day

Have a healthy snack on #NationalTrailMixDay

National Trail Mix Day is observed annually on 31 August and was created to honour and recognise the healthy snack that was developed to provide energy while on hikes.

This snack is ideal to take along on a hike as it is lightweight, easy to store, nutritious and filled with carbohydrates thanks to the dried fruits and granola, providing a quick energy boost as the fats in the nuts provide sustained energy.

One claim to the invention of trail mix, belongs to two Californian surfers who combined peanuts and raisins in 1968 to make an energy snack. However, in the 1958 Jack Kerouac novel, The Dharma Bums, the two main characters described trail mix as part of their menu for their planned hiking trip.

To celebrate, you can use your favourite ingredients and make your own trail mix, but, if you are not up to making your own, you can find many varieties of trail mix at your grocery or convenience store.
