Negligent, potentially ‘high’ driver becomes violent towards medics

The driver of one of the vehicles was acting strangely after the accident on Hendrik Potgieter Road.

A quantity of an illegal substance was apparently confiscated by police during a vehicle accident on Hendrik Potgieter Road near Hillfox Shopping Centre on 27 August.

Reports from the scene indicated that at least two vehicles collided with each other at about 1.30pm, causing a major traffic jam.

Onlookers at the scene, who stopped and assisted the occupants, were convinced that the driver of the silver BMW involved in the accident was under the influence of banned substances.

According to the Florida CPF Sector 1 Facebook page, their patroller noticed that the driver of the silver BMW was sitting in the driver’s seat, acting strangely.

“The patroller called for medical assistance, and Vitalmed and ER24 ambulances arrived shortly afterwards. It was quickly ascertained that the driver was under the influence of narcotics,” stated the page.

It was further alleged that the BMW driver became violent towards the paramedics. However, “he was restrained and once stable, he was transported to Helen Joseph Hospital.”

It was also said that police found narcotics in his car. In addition, the driver was alleged to have caused another accident in Sophiatown and had fled the scene of that accident.

A case has been opened against the driver for several criminal and traffic offences. The Honeydew Police could not be reached for comment.
