Construction started on clinic

Residents urged to adhere to safety measures

“We’re battling with motorists disregarding the road signs warning them of the construction,” said Leefar Moshibe.

Leefar, who is the Client Liaison Officer for the Florida Clinic upgrade, said that since construction has started, they have had quite a few problems with motorists using Madeline Street.

“We want motorists to adhere to the safety measures. We do not want a situation where someone is killed. They disregard the flag ladies when the machinery drives in and out of the construction site, and do not adhere to the speed limit of 40 km/h,” he said.

He added that, because they are working on a government project, they do have the right to close the road completely. “But, we would not want to do that, as it will result in motorists having to make use of a detour. This is our very last option,” Leefar said.

Judith Khumalo and Beauty Thahala help to warn the motorists using the road in front of the site.

The project will take approximately six months to be completed which means they will be at the construction site Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm. “There might come a time when we would need to work on the site during weekends, but that will be an exception, and we will communicate that to the residents. All we ask is that motorists respect the flag ladies and abide by their instructions,” he said.

Patients are urged to remember that the clinic is not open, and should they need to visit the clinic, they should visit one of the other clinics in the region, such as Rex Street, Weltevreden Park, Helderkruin, Discoverers or even the one at Helen Joseph.

“If you have been collecting your chronic medication from the clinic every month, you can visit the Westview Clinic, as there will be staff members there that can assist you,” said Leefar.

He concluded by saying, “We also do not have any building rubble left on the site, it was all donated to local schools and churches. All subcontractors and labourers have been listed on a database and the intakes have closed.”
