Only love and laughter for King’s grandparents

Grandparents go the distance for their grandchildren before National Senior Citizens' Day.

The King’s School West Rand invited the grandparents of their preschool learners to spend a fun-filled day with their grandchildren.

The little ones made ‘grandpa’ and ‘grandma’ pictures for their grandparents and spoke about words that describe them. The Grade RR and R children sang songs on the hall stage and guest speaker, the director of the Association of Christian Schools International Southern Africa, Sean Moore, shared some words of encouragement and wisdom with the grandparents.

Some children’s grandparents live far away and were unable to attend, so many children ‘adopted’ grandparents who spent the morning with them. An anonymous adopted granny said, “I loved the heart of the teachers and how they work with the kids and made us feel so welcome. The excitement of the little ones was so very tangible and I loved the idea that we grannies had to do exercises with the little ones. We were also encouraged by the guest speaker to read to our little ones and spend time with them and reminded that they do not say what we say, but do what we do.”

The children were allowed to go home with their grandparents after their picnic.

This annual event took place on 18 August, just before National Senior Citizens’ Day on 21 August. The day was created for the opportunity to support, honour and show appreciation to our senior citizens as well as to show recognition for their achievements and the contributions they have made to our communities.

Although the school did not intentionally celebrate their grandparents’ day in conjunction with Senior Citizens’ Day, the sentiment was the same. Grade R teacher, Cathy Moore, said, “What a privilege it was to observe the interaction and love shared between the different generations.”
