National Dog Day

Give some love to you furry best friend on #NationalDogDay

It is said that, “A dog is a man’s best friend.” And, on 26 August we celebrate National Dog Day – a day encouraging ownership of dogs of all breeds, be it mixed or pure.

Today also affords all dogs the opportunity to to live a happy, safe and abuse-free life.

Dogs do not only offer us companionship. They also keep us safe and provide aid for those in need. Many people use this day to try and find homes for all dogs in need of a forever home and loving family, and the National Dog Day Fund aims to rescue 10 000 dogs each year. National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by pet-lifestyle expert and author, Colleen Paige.

To celebrate National Dog Day can be as easy a giving your furry four-legged friend a hug and kiss (if it’s that way inclined!), but, for those who want to take their love and appreciation to another level, here are some other ways for you to celebrate:

– Adopt a dog from your local shelter.

– Do a safety check of your home to ensure it is safe for your dog and others.

– Donate blankets, food and toys to animal welfare shelters.

– Have a Dog Day party and invite all your friends and their dogs.

– Buy your dog a new toy (or two or five!)

– Take your dog for a walk to the park, brush his coat or give him a massage.

– Teach your dog a new trick or two.

– Buy a new fashionable collar and leash.

– Every time someone says hello, say, “Because Dogs.”

– If you do not have a dog, ask your neighbour if you could take his for a walk.

Use #NationalDogDay and post photos of you and your dog(s) on social media.
