After the recently held AGM, the Roodepoort SPCA reported that during the past 12 months, a total of 2 808 consultations were handled by the veterinary staff.
Following on from these consultations, 1 333 animals were treated for various reasons. These animals were either already at the SPCA’s kennels, or brought in by private owners. During this same period, 351 female cats and 918 female dogs were spayed, while 197 male cats and 792 male dogs were neutered. These animals included pets adopted from the SPCA plus pets belonging to individuals who were proven unable to pay private veterinary fees.
Although the SPCA has a registered animal hospital with qualified veterinarians, veterinary nurses and animal welfare assistants, they have never received any financial aid or subsidy from government or the local council, but that has never stopped them from helping animals in need.
The Roodepoort SPCA takes its role seriously, and believes that the community has the right to receive feedback on what is happening at the SPCA, in order for them to understand the importance of the SPCA’s role in protecting, caring for and assisting animals in need.
The SPCA’s primary purpose is to assist animals in its kennels, or those that are brought in – to examine and care for them and to sterilise all adopted pets. The dedicated veterinary team is often called upon to handle emergency situations where they have to rescue abandoned animals or animals that have been involved in animal cruelty cases. This involves working closely with the inspectorate team and often means after hours work as well as working long hours.
