Thieves target furniture store in 14th Avenue District Shopping Centre.

A prominent home and furniture shop in the 14th Avenue District Shopping Centre is counting its losses after being hit by armed suspects who demanded goods on 15 August.

Centre management confirmed to Northsider that the police are investigating the incident, which took place at House & Home.

Spokesperson for the centre, Salome Joubert, indicated that about eight suspects were involved.

A frameless glass wall, which was replaced hours later, was damaged by gun shots during the incident, but Joubert stated that no-one was injured.

When asked whether the centre had previously been the target of criminal activities, Joubert responded, “The level of crime in our country impacts everyone.”

She added, “We take security seriously and have extensive security measures in place in and around the centre. We regularly assess them [security features] for effectiveness and update or change them where necessary. The safety and security of our shoppers, retailers and their staff are a priority for us.”

“We also work closely with the police, our security providers and tenants for security at the centre, and will continue to do so,” Joubert concluded.
