Helderkruin Post Office robbed under suspicious circumstances

Post Office mum about robberies.

Shortly after 4 pm yesterday, 15 August, the Helderkruin Post Office in Ouklip Road was robbed – for the second time in a month.

The Post Office was also robbed on 3 August.

Not much detail is available, but it appears that three or four armed men entered the Post Office, allegedly robbing it of about R40 000.

There are suspicious circumstances surrounding both robberies. More than one source confirmed that both robberies happened just before the cash-in-transit van came to collect the money. When asked to comment, the area manager refused and referred the Record to the police.

The Record is in possession of other information, which can not be published at this stage, that points to the possibility that the robberies might have been an ‘inside job’.

A source also said that there is apparently only one security guard at the centre and that shop owners pay a monthly fee for the guard. He then visits each shop every hour, to have them sign a form. The shop owners are however concerned about what happens to the security of the centre while the guard is in and out of stores. This information has not yet been verified.

Roodepoort Police said they could not comment on whether they are indeed investigating the possibility that it was an ‘inside job’ because it is being investigated at cluster level.
