Hit-and-run victims want justice

A family is offering a reward for information on a recent hit-and-run incident.

A local family is appealing to the community to come forward with information regarding the driver responsible for the hit-and-run accident in which they were involved. The accident occurred on Hendrik Potgieter Road near the Wild Eagle Spur.

The family was on the way to the restaurant to celebrate moving into a new house when their vehicle was hit by a speeding car at about 7.20pm on 12 August. Mary Jane Schroeder explained that she, her partner and their two children were in the vehicle when a vehicle hit them on the left-hand rear side of the car. She said the vehicle slammed into them so hard that if it had hit them straight on, they would have all been killed.

She added that the vehicle was a white Corsa Hatchback, which had spun across the road before hitting their vehicle. “The right-hand side of the man’s car was wrecked.

We thought he would stop but he only drove slowly for a while in the reserve lane before taking off,” Mary said.

She described the driver as a man with dark hair, who was wearing a black shirt with yellow polka dots. The family was very shaken after the ordeal and was unable to ascertain any more details. However, they did get the details of witnesses to the incident, who thought the Corsa driver must have been under the influence of alcohol, based on the way he was driving.

The family was helped by a passerby who towed their vehicle and even offered the children food as they had not yet eaten. Mary explained that they drove around and spoke to local businesses the next day to gather more information and visited the Muldersdrift Police to see whether anyone had been caught speeding or under the influence, but they were out of luck.

The family is offering a reward of R3 000 for information on the driver. Mary and her partner, Roger Harris, are grateful to everyone who stopped to help them on the evening of the accident and to Ronnie Smith from Ronnie’s Tyres for helping them get their vehicle back into working order.
