“Paramedics assessed the patient, believed to be in his 50s, and found that he had sustained serious burn wounds to his arms, chest and face,” said Russel Meiring, ER24’s spokesperson. The man was treated for his injuries and immediately transported to Helen Joseph Provincial Hospital for urgent care.

According to the paramedics that treated the driver, he told them he had picked up the suspect and driven him to Rail Road. The suspect then attempted to hijack the taxi driver and threw a substance – believed to be acid – into his face.

“The patient was able to apprehend the suspect, who was later handed over to the local authorities. An investigation into this incident will be launched by local authorities,” said Meiring.
