First birthday at Ngwenya benefits SPCA

The first anniversary of Ngwenya Country Market supported the Randburg SPCA.

Ngwenya Country Market celebrated its first anniversary by giving back to the community through the Randburg SPCA.

All the stallholders and local businesses at the Ngwenya Glass Village donated items and vouchers to make up raffle prizes. All the proceeds from the raffle were given to the Randburg SPCA, who sold tickets on the day. Hampers, such as cheese platters, alcohol, restaurant vouchers and other prizes were handed out to over 16 lucky winners on 6 August, and the SPCA raised R6 300 to swell their coffers.

SPCA management committee member, Ashtyn Mackenzie, said, “It has been a great day and we have seen great support. We would like to give a massive thank you to the vendors for coming on board and sponsoring the hampers, and to the community and to Ngwenya for letting us benefit from their first anniversary market.”

Viv Prettejohn, part owner and manageress of the village, and stallholder Tina Berti, who first came together to begin the country market, attribute its success to their ability to stick to their original vision and what they believe in. The market was first started to generate more local interest in the village. They wanted to create an ‘upmarket’ market where local vendors could showcase their wares.

The first market consisted of a mere nine stalls but it now boasts 50 unique stalls, which uphold the organic, country style Tina and Viv were always aiming for. Trophies were given to two stalls, Go Coffee and Tipto Tinto, on the day for their loyalty to the market. Viv and Tina decided the best way to celebrate the first anniversary of the market was by supporting the Randburg SPCA as their way of giving back to the community which supports the market.
