Telkom troubles torment Welties resident

Weltevreden Park resident struggles to have his Telkom landline account cancelled when the phone has not been in use for months.

Local resident, Stephen Fautley, has been plagued by a Telkom account since March.

Optic fibre was installed in Stephen’s complex in March, and since then he has been without a Telkom landline. He tried to cancel his landline and install a connection through the fibre provider. Although he now has fibre internet, he still receives monthly bills from Telkom asking him to pay his account, an outstanding amount of a few hundred rand.

He has been told on numerous occasions via SMS and email correspondence that his Telkom account has been suspended and he has to pay the amount owing in full for his landline to be reconnected. He said the correspondence also threatened that he would be blacklisted.

Stephen has approached his service provider, Cybersmart, Telkom’s faults and cancellation departments, his closest Telkom store and the Pretoria head office. He has either received no feedback or the department was unable to assist him. The only real progress he made was when Telkom refunded a month’s worth of service charges, and amount of R147,11, in April.

His neighbour experienced a similar problem but was able to have her service cancelled. “If I am meant to be such a valued customer, why can no one help me? I don’t know what to do or who to approach any more. I did not think it would be this much of a hassle,” Stephen said. He added he has never owed Telkom money in the 20 years he has had the landline and only wants Telkom to acknowledge that the line has been disconnected and the service cancelled.

Telkom had not responded to queries posed by the Roodepoort Northsider before the time of publication of this article.
