Phase two of online admission process commences

Placement period commenced on 24 July

The online admissions process has now entered its second phase, as the learner placement period commenced on 24 July.

The placement period will run from 24 July to 30 October, and, according to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), parents will receive offers of placement via SMS. “Parents will have seven days to either accept or reject the offer and we urge them to respond to these offers promptly,” said Panyaza Lesufi, the Gauteng Member of the Executive Committee for Education.

He added that not all parents will receive an SMS before the end of August as the process was delayed by the winter school holidays. “Districts are working with schools to sign off and verify the final list of admissions, per school,” he said.

However, parents should not panic if they have not received an SMS yet. They will be sent out within the next three weeks. If no notification has been received after three weeks, they should contact their school district.

“Parents who have been informed that their application has been declined can lodge an objection with the district by completing an objection form that is available on the GDE website, www.education.gpg.gov.za, or at the school,” Lesufi said.

It is reported that a total of 12 684 applications were made by non- South African citizens. “When incomplete documents are submitted and the parent submits proof of application from the Department of Home Affairs, schools will accept learners provisionally.

This applies to both South African and non– South African citizens. Schools will keep a database of undocumented learners and parents,” said Lesufi.

The GDE commended parents for heeding the call to complete their online applications on time, and Lesufi concluded by saying, “We thank the people of Gauteng for the overwhelming response to the online admission process. The early processing of admissions mean learning and teaching can commence on the first day of the 2018 academic calendar.”
