Claremont holiday programme a huge success

Social worker feels programme was challenging but valuable to children

The Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) Claremont hosted a hugely successful three-day holiday programme during the July school holidays.

According to Hannie Reynecke, a social worker at the SAVF, the children enjoyed the activities they participated in, as well as the food. The programme was attended by between 80 and 90 children every day. They had an opportunity to play games such as netball and cricket and ran sack races. Their skills were also tested with the “Win a minute” games, and the five-year-olds had an opportunity to make their favourite Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs figurines out of clay. They also had an opportunity to dress up and take part in a fashion show, where they were rewarded with prizes of sweets.

The programme did not only supply food for the children’s souls, but for their bodies as well. “The children received a hot meal every day, as well as sweets, cold drinks, chips and chocolate muffins to take home with them,” said Hannie.

All the volunteers interacting with the children received thank you gifts from the SAVF at the end of the programme. “Thank you to everyone who made this programme a success by either donating the needed items or giving of their time and effort. Giancarlo Filomeno, Living Balls, the volunteers, Gary who did all our purchases, Millie for the delicious food, Frans, Nelson and Joyce who helped with the daily tidying up, Promise from Rata, and Bernie,” said Hannie.

“Judging from the joy of the children who attended the holiday programme, it was a huge success.

Once again, the needs of the children in the area who suffer from lack of stimulation and stability in their circumstances was evident and at times it was challenging to manage them, but this is the reason why the holiday programmes are valuable to them. I trust that the seeds sown during this project will remind them of the lessons learned,” she concluded.
