UPDATE: Waterval Road to get speed-limit signage

Joburg Road Agency will install 60km/h signs on Waterval Road.

Traffic-calming measures will not be implemented on Waterval Road.

Marketing and communications operations manager for Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), Bertha Peters-Scheepers, said traffic engineers returned to Waterval Road after their initial visit on 5 July. This was done after schools had reopened for the third term to accurately determine the traffic flow. They were on site during peak-hour traffic and counted the number of vehicles using Waterval Road to and from the local school.

“It was observed that some of the vehicles used alternative routes from the school towards Cascades Road.

No issues were noted at the intersection with Van Damn Street as only four vehicles turned into Waterval Road between 7am and 7.45am. The flow of traffic and the number of vehicles are no different to other streets in the area. No vehicles were observed speeding excessively along Waterval Road,” said Peters-Scheepers.

Based on the data, it was recommended that the JRA depot repaint the centre line along Waterval Road and install 60km/h signs in order for the Metro Police to enforce speed-limit laws. The request for traffic calming measures (a traffic circle) “is not supported”.

Local resident, Liz Fisher, who originally lodged a complaint about vehicles speeding along Waterval Road said JRA’s response is a huge disappointment. She wonders if Metro Police would ever put up speed traps on Waterval Road to be able to enforce speed-limit laws.
