Motorist escapes weekend ambush

Local motorist loses handbag during afternoon ambush near Zandspruit.

An eventful weekend almost turned disastrous for a Wilgeheuwel motorist who narrowly escaped an attempted hijacking between the Beyers Naudé Drive and Bothma Street intersection near Zandspruit informal settlement.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, 22 July, when the victim was on her way back home after a church event.

It was reported that the victim’s car was ambushed by scores of perpetrators who held her up and took her handbag containing valuables such as her cellphone, wallet and credit cards.

The victim’s partner, Charles Culbert confirmed the incident. He said, “She was on her way back from spending Christian Day near Garden World when the guys surrounded her car at the traffic lights on Beyers Naudé Drive in Zandspruit”.

At the intersection, the suspects appeared from nowhere and surrounded the car.

Culbert added that his girlfriend, who is still traumatised, bravely accelerated after the attackers had pulled out the handbag and she drove off to Honeydew Police Station to report the matter.

This incident comes a week after a Mercedes-Benz driver was held at gunpoint and hijacked at a Sasol service station at the corner of Christiaan de Wet Road and Wilhelmina Avenue near Clearwater Mall on 19 July. Fortunately the vehicle was recovered by a car-tracking company hours later in Kagiso, west of Johannesburg, Honeydew Police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan confirmed.

Muthan also cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant when stopping at intersections and services stations. “Always be extra observant wherever you are parked, especially at intersections and garages. Make sure that your doors and windows are locked at all times,” Muthan pleaded.
