Lions celebrate Mandela Day with Randfontein Police

In commemoration of the Lions Clubs centenary year.

Randfontein Police partnered with three Lions Clubs and spent their 67 minutes for Mandela Day with community members from the entire Randfontein.

In commemoration of the Lions Clubs’ centenary year, the initiative reached out to 100 people in the Randfontein community. Their aim was to adhere to the 2017 Mandela Day motto “#actionagainstpoverty”. The Weltevreden, Helderkruin en Clearwater Cyber Lions Clubs collaborated to provide a goodie bag to each of the 100 identified recipients.

Randfontein Police facilitated the event on Saturday, 22 July. The station commander, Brigadier MJ Manamela welcomed the 100 recipients, whose ages ranged from four months to those in their 70s.

The three club presidents, Johan Gouws (Weltevreden); Michelle van der Westhuizen (Helderkruin) and Dee Easton (Clearwater Cyber) then elaborated on the reason for their outreach. The recipients were treated to freshly maded pancakes while awaiting the official hand-over.

Members of the Randfontein Police Social Crime Prevention Unit and the Sector Managers assisted in the distribution of the gifts. Every person received a blanket, soup, bread, fruit, a beanie and a scarf. Babies received a hamper containing nappies and baby products.

The event was well attended and the recipients expressed their appreciation at this gesture of goodwill.

“The Randfontein Police are proud to be part of this initiative. We appreciate the Lions Clubs for their culture of giving. We believe this act today will impact positively on the lives of the recipients,” said Brigadier Manamela.
