Work on Florida Clinic to commence

Project will get under way within the month

Florida residents were informed of the progress of the Florida Community Clinic’s upgrade project during a public meeting held on 19 July.

The councillor for Ward 70, Caleb Finn, called the meeting to inform residents about the project’s progress. During the meeting, the contractor who will be handling the project, the Client Liaison Officer (CLO) and the Community Participants’ Consultant (CPC) was introduced.

The main contractor working on the project will be Shorta Engineering, with Onward Makeche as the Project Manager, Leefar Moshibethe as CLO, and Zanele Lekhobo as CPC.

Pule Ratau, the Development Manager from JDA conducting the public meeting.

Pule Ratau, the Development Manager from the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) handled the meeting, and fielded questions from the attendees. The biggest concern raised by the residents was the percentage of work that will be awarded to local Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs).

Pule ensured them that all of the applications submitted to the JDA by the SMME owners had been captured on their local database, and the successful candidates will be contacted and interviewed within the next two weeks. “Although the registration process has now closed, we will be looking to outsource within the community, should we need someone to perform a specialised task,” he added.

One of the residents wanted to know what would happen to the rubble after the old clinic building was demolished, and was informed that the City of Johannesburg will be using the windows, beams, roofing and doors for other projects. “I prefer donating the other materials to institutions like schools and churches within the local community. Interested parties should, however, liaise with me, and not just accept that they can have the materials,” said Pule.

Should you require more information or have a query regarding the project you can contact Zanele by sending an e-mail to zanelel@asandprojects.co.za.

Caleb was clearly happy about the project’s progress and said, “I am pleased that the project will get underway as it will benefit the local community tremendously – not just the actual new clinic, but also the provision of job opportunities for the SMMEs.

A minimum of 30 per cent of the scope of the work will be awarded to local registered SMMEs and includes a variety of tasks, including painting, tiling, brick-work and much more.”
