CoJ ward committee members to be inducted

Induction of successful ward committee members announced

The Speaker of Council, councillor Vasco da Gama, has announced the dates for the induction of the newly elected ward committee members.

Following the successful supplementary elections that were held to fill the vacant positions in various wards, the members are now ready to be inducted into the council of the City of Johannesburg (CoJ)

The induction is scheduled to take place regionally over two weekends from 9am to 5pm and the 180 ward committee members from Region C – which includes all areas from Roodepoort to Northgate as well as the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens – will take place on 29 July at the Roodepoort Civic Centre.

The purpose of inducting the ward committee members is to ensure they understand their roles clearly, in order to achieve their mandates as set out by legislation.

The induction will also ensure ward committee members are informed about the various opportunities available to them as well as the support they will be provided with. This will further ensure they will be able to fulfill the roles of giving advice and support to the ward councillors during the execution of their duties.

A ward committee is is an advisory body consisting of people within a community who know certain sectors of the community well, and are able to assist the ward councillor to carry out his mandate. The committee works with the ward councillor to ensure the public participation process in that ward represents the full diversity of interests and certain issues of governance.
