#CagedGirls: SAHRC to step in

Police still busy investigating.

Within an hour of the Record’s article about three girls being locked up in a cage-like room at Roodepoort Police Station going live, the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has indicated that it will investigate the incident.

A senior legal officer at the SAHRC said they will interview the mother as well as the relevant parties at Roodepoort Police Station, and should their findings validate it, release a press statement.

On the afternoon of 11 July a man and a woman were locked up in the holding cells. Their three daughters – one aged 7 and the other two both 11 years old – were locked in a cage-like room for about two hours. It is alleged there were criminals with them in the ‘cell’. The three girls were allegedly ‘hysterical’.

The woman said that her lawyer will contact the Record shortly to divulge more details.
