Sparrow celebrates the spirit of Mandela Day with sport

"In honour of Nelson Mandela, who made us one through sport, we decided to celebrate Mandela Day with sport."

“Nelson Mandela brought us together through sport and that is why we decided to celebrate Mandela Day with a sport day,” said Mary-Ann MacDonald, the fundraiser at Sparrow Ministries.

The organisation in collaboration with corporate companies organised a non-stop soccer and volleyball day, in an attempt to raise money for Sparrow. “We sent a needs list to all the corporate companies that had offered their help. As entrance fee for the day’s activities, they were asked to donate something from the list, or snacks and food for the day,” said Mary-Ann.

The participating companies had the opportunity to play a soccer or volleyball match against one of the Sparrow youth teams. “This is a way to get the community, staff, youth and corporates together to help and acknowledge what Sparrow is doing for destitute mothers and children,” she said.

One of the big sponsors was the Coricraft Group, with its staff spending the whole day at the centre. They donated groceries, clothes, furniture items and provided lunch for everyone. They also renovated the reception area. “We identified Sparrow to sponsor and support in commemoration of Mandela Day. We would like to thank the Coricraft management and their employees for their contributions and support. The success of this project is owed to all of them,” said Sifiso Hlongwane, Coricraft human resources business partner.

Corine McClintock, founder/ director of Sparrow Ministries was also very grateful for all the help and support, and said, “Today, 27 years ago, as Nelson Mandela was released from his 27 years in prison, we started Sparrow Ministry of help.

We want to thank the Coricraft Group for their generosity today and the community for always supporting us,” she said.
