Eleven year old knits for Choc

A Strubens Valley resident knits 32 beanies for Choc.

Eleven-year-old Sasha Gallinetti likes nothing more than to knit and crochet in her spare time.

Under her grandmother’s guidance, Sasha learnt the art of knitting and crocheting when she was seven. To her family’s amazement she continues to knit and crochet anything from blankets to baby jerseys, all the while teaching herself new patterns and styles. Sasha knits items and occasionally sells them to friends and family.

After her grandmother, Marion Main, suggested she donate some items to Choc (Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa), Sasha knitted beanies for over a year and on 20 July, she gave 32 beanies of all sizes to the Foundation. She also donated eight scarves, a crocheted blanket and a few baby jerseys.

Although Sasha was unable to hand over the beanies to the children herself, she was still very excited about handing over the items to Choc. Sasha said knitting makes her happy and she sings songs in her head while she sits and knits or crochets.

Marion said she takes her hobby everywhere with her and attracts a lot of attention and interest from people. “She carries a big bag full of wool and all her stuff when we go to church and she will sit and knit. I ask her why she doesn’t take just what she needs, but she insists on taking the whole bag because the other grannies want to see what she is working on,” said Marion.

Her mother and father, Karen and Steve Gallinetti, are very proud of her work and support her hobby.
