Toastmasters and the Outliers

Toastmasters

According to its mission statement, Toastmasters helps men and women learn the art of speaking, listening and thinking – vital skills that promote self-actualisation and enhance leadership.

Earlier this month, the Florida Toastmasters club honed in on their communication and leadership skills with excellent results.

Tim Knights and Craig Ellis

First up was toastmaster Tino Chadyiwa, who took members on an intellectual journey through the world of Outliers, written by author Malcolm Gladwell. He was followed by Robert de Kramer who gave a powerful presentation about the Toastmasters Mission Statement during the Educational Session.

In her speech, Joan Botha touched on music, saying that a persons’ taste in music says a lot about them. No matter what people listen to, there seems to be a common consensus as to why they listen.

Karen Gray opened her speech with a poem from author Guillaume Apollinaire‘s book, Come to the edge. She spoke about sexual harassment and how it remains widespread in the workplace.

Vivien Katzav explained that navigating and knowing how to start a tricky conversation can feel overwhelming, whether it’s discussing problem behaviour with a partner or conflicting relations at work.

After a break, Tino Chadyiwa welcomed the Table Topic Master of the evening, Michael Lencross. The mystery of the The Impromptu Murders sent chills down the spines of the listeners.

Craig Ellis was presented with a Toastmasters Ribbon for completing his Advanced Communicator Bronze Assignments. Michael Glencross was presented with a Toastmasters Ribbon for completing his Competent Leader Assignments. Tim was the recipient of a Toastmasters Ribbon for completing his Advanced Leader Bronze Assignments.
