City Power to investigate alleged explosion on Glover Street

City Power will investigate the nature of the incident.

City Power has launched an investigation into the nature of the alleged electrical box explosion in Glover Street.

The incident occurred in the morning of 9 July. City Power was attending to an electrical box on Glover Street after a power outage. Residents say the box exploded and a man was severely injured in the incident.

City Power spokesperson, Virgil James, said it was a City Power employee who was injured while performing his duty. “Fortunately it was not a fatal injury and the employee was admitted to hospital for treatment.” City Power is not at liberty to disclose anything further out of respect for the employee and his family, but they are receiving all the necessary support.

According to Ineke van Huyssteen, an ER24 spokesperson, their paramedics arrived on scene at 8am, and found that the man was already being treated by another ambulance service. The man needed advanced life support and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Local resident, Pat Grunwald, said she heard about the incident through the community WhatsApp group. Shortly after, she decided to appeal to the community for donations to send a gift to the man who was injured while trying to restore power to the community.

“Many of the residents have boreholes and are unable to pump any water without power. The City Power guys know this and make an effort to come out and assist us,” she said.

She believes the area is once again being targeted for cable theft and that this is the cause of the explosion. She said theft is a real scourge in the community and the thieves do not realise the domino effect these crimes have on the City and the community.
