National Piña Colada Day

10 July brings with it the annual observation of National Piña Colada Day.
The Piña Colada is a sweet, rum-based cocktail which is usually blended or shaken with ice, coconut cream and pineapple juice.
The name ‘Piña Colada’ literally means ‘strained pineapple’, which is a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink.
There are different claims to the invention of the Piña Colada beginning in 1952 in San Juan – with each inventor sticking to his story. The truth is that pineapple and rum have been together since the beginning of the distillation of rum. 1922 saw the first written reference to Piña Colada, however, this recipe did not include coconut.
On National Piña Colada Day, you do not have to be sitting on a beach or the deck of a cruise ship – you can enjoy a nice tall, cool one where ever you are! But, always remember to drink responsibly, and to never drink and drive!
