Jozua Naudé Primary School’s former principal took action after rated film was screened to learners

The incident took place in 2017.

The Gauteng Department of Education’s findings in the 2017 investigations into the screening of Keanu at Jozua Naudé Primary School concluded that former principal, Fyters Mzwakhe Hlatshwayo, could not be held responsible.

The movie contains excessive, explicit language, violence, nudity scenes and glorification of drug use.

According to GDE spokesperson, Mr Steve Mabona, a department head and teachers screened the film to an audience of Grade 6 and 7 learners while Mr Hlatshwayo was not present at the school. “On the day in question, he requested early departure that was duly authorised,” stated Mabona.

At the time, concerned parents contacted Roodepoort Record. Parents wanted the school to take decisive action.

According to Mr Hlatshwayo, he did not receive any complaints.

When Mr Hlatshwayo became aware of the fact that the film had been screened, he took action against the teachers and department head involved. They were admonished during internal proceedings.

The GDE indicated that they were not dissatisfied by any act on the principal’s part.
