Community confirms meteor spotting

Community comments on meteorite

Community members on the road confirmed the spotting of a meteorite this morning (15 June). Record readers were responding to an article about a cellphone video shot by resident Matthew Hope at about 6am while driving in Constantia Kloof. Matthew said it was amazing to see the meteorite, which was big and clear. His sentiments were echoed by Chris Schutte, who said he saw the meteorite on his way to work.

“I was driving down Rabie Road just before you go under the highway when I saw it. At first I thought it was a shooting star but realized the travel time was a bit longer. It was very bright.”

Brandon Bothma was in Fourways at the N1 on-ramp when he saw a flying comet-like object cruising at low altitude.

“There were sparks coming off the object. At first I thought it was a plane on fire, that’s how low it was.”

It is still unclear if, and where, where the meteorite landed.
