Soup and blankets to stop the cold

Child Welfare South Africa Roodepoort kicks off winter drive

Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA) Roodepoort launched their winter drive on Friday, 9 June, by handing out blankets and hot soup to foster families.

Estelle Odendaal, the manager of CWSA Roodepoort, added that the recent cold snap was one of the reasons for the initiative being launched. “Those in attendance today have been selected out of our huge caseload, because at the moment, they need help the most. These representatives of approximately 40 families are newly registered foster parents who have not received their grants yet. The grants usually take about three months to be finalised and we wanted to help them. We made up packages consisting of blankets for the different families, and they were invited to enjoy a cup of soup and bread before leaving,” she said.

Estelle added that they follow up with the families on a weekly basis “We take them some food and at the same time, ensure they have everything they need,” she said.

After receiving their blankets and enjoying a hot cup of soup, every family representative also received a fresh vegetable hamper to take home with them. “We just received this huge vegetable donation, and decided to make up a hamper for everyone to take home, together with their blankets,” a very happy Estelle said.
