Update: Protesters threaten to burn journalist’s bike (Photos)

Entrances closed by Metro Police.

Despite the Record’s journalist entering the area where the Davidsonville protest erupted “at his own risk”, it is non the wiser as to the exact reasons for the protest.

The journalist had to abandon his attempt when he could not find the contact who invited him to the area, and was threatened by protesters that they would set his motorcycle alight. Service delivery has been vaguely cited as the reason, and one woman said it is about “electricity, housing and 25 years’ of broken promises by the government”.

Police try to clear the road.

The Public Order Policing (Pops) unit had to step in earlier to contain the escalating violence. It is alleged that rubber bullets were fired to disperse the protesters.

The Record will continue to cover events as they unfold.
