No end in sight for family

Family hasn't found alternative housing

Three weeks after the Record reported on Karen* and her two children’s living arrangements, things haven’t changed at all.

Karen lives with her teenage children in a room in a house. They received an eviction notice to vacate the room by the end of May, but they have nowhere else to go. “I cannot live on the street with my children. They are still going to school and they need a safe place to stay,” she said.

The Record contacted the Department of Health to enquire whether they could renew her contract and increase her salary since she receives less than the required minimum wage. We are still waiting for comment.

Karen’s salary is a mere R2 500 per month. Finding other accommodation has proven to be difficult, since she cannot afford to pay more than she already pays.

The Record has in the interim made arrangements with Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) to sterilise and neuter her five cats.

If there is anyone who can assist Karen, please call Roelien Vorster, the Record’s editor, on 011 955 1130.
