‘Work together to fight crime’

ROODEPOORT – What's happening with crime in Sector 2.

The Honeydew Sector 2 Community Police Forum meeting was held on 25 May.

In the meeting it was revealed that there has not been a major spike in crime-related incidents of late, however, crime remains at a high level.

Sector chairperson, John Baisley said in a report that the three crimes the forum attempts to tackle are burglaries, house robberies and hijackings. “These are stable but we need to do a lot more to bring them down. We experience at least one burglary a day in the sector.”

In May, theft out of motor vehicles, burglary and house robberies rose slightly, while theft of motor vehicles, business burglary, robbery and hijacking incidents decreased.

“Crime remains real. Only by getting involved in your area can one start to make a difference. The police cannot do it on their own and many security companies are reactive. Fortunately, in our sector, we have the entire sector covered by an association and each association also has a dedicated security service provider.”

According to Baisley, security companies all work together and patrol in convoy.

He urged community members to support their residents’ association and those companies that work with the forum.

“Only when the three come together [police, security companies and residents] does the neighbourhood become safer for everyone.”

He asked residents for leads on drug-related matters in the sector.

“I thank you for the information and we will do this exercise again shortly.”
